Attar vs Perfume: Which Lasts Longer and Which Should You Buy?
TrendFumes Team
· 4 min readIt is one of the most common questions we hear: attar or perfume – which is better? The honest answer is that they are different tools for different moments. Here is a plain-language breakdown so you can choose with confidence.
What is an attar?
An attar (or ittar) is a concentrated perfume oil, traditionally made from natural essences and applied directly to the skin. Most attars are alcohol-free, which is why many people find them gentle and why they are popular for daily and religious wear.
What is a perfume (eau de parfum)?
Modern perfume dissolves fragrance oils in alcohol. The alcohol lifts the scent into the air, giving you the noticeable “sillage” or trail that perfume is known for.
Attar vs perfume at a glance
- Base: Attar is oil-based and alcohol-free; perfume is alcohol-based.
- Projection: Perfume spreads further; attar sits closer to the skin and reveals itself up close.
- Longevity: Oils evaporate slowly, so a drop of attar often stays on skin and clothes for a long time.
- Application: Perfume is sprayed; attar is dabbed on pulse points, so a tiny amount goes a long way.
- Size and price: Our attars come in 12 ml bottles at PKR 1,800–2,000, while our perfumes are 50 ml at PKR 2,500–3,400.
Which lasts longer?
Because attars are concentrated oils without alcohol, they tend to cling to skin and fabric more slowly and quietly. Perfumes announce themselves faster and project more. Longevity for both depends on your skin, the weather and how you apply it, which is why we always suggest moisturising first. See how to make perfume last longer for practical tips.
Our attar collection
- Ameer ul Oud Attar – a royal, long-lasting oud for men and women.
- Tuscan Leather Attar – warm leather with subtle spice, made for men.
- Cigar Attar – rich, smoky and sophisticated for evenings.
- Invictus Attar – crisp aquatic and citrus with woody undertones, unisex.
- Gucci Flora Inspired Attar – a fresh, blooming floral for women.
When to choose each
- Choose attar for prayers, close company, Fridays, or when you prefer an alcohol-free scent.
- Choose perfume for the office, outings and weddings, when you want your scent to be noticed.
- Layer both: apply a drop of oud attar first, then a matching perfume on top for a deeper, personal blend.
How to apply attar properly
- Start with clean, moisturised skin. Oils sit better on hydrated skin.
- Use the applicator or a fingertip. One small dab is enough.
- Apply to pulse points: wrists, side of the neck, behind the ears.
- Do not rub. Press gently and allow it to warm and settle.
- Dab a little on clothing such as a scarf, kurta collar or handkerchief, after a quick patch test on a hidden area.
Common myths about attar
- “Attar is only for older people.” Not true; today’s attars include fresh aquatic, floral and woody styles that suit everyone.
- “Attar is always extremely strong.” It is concentrated, so you need very little, but most attars stay close to the skin.
- “Perfume is more modern, so it is better.” Neither is better. They simply behave differently.
How to store attar
Keep the bottle tightly closed, away from heat and direct sunlight, and in an upright position. A cool drawer is perfect. Because attars are oils, good storage preserves their character for a long time.
Which one should you buy first?
If you want a scent that others notice and that you can spray in seconds, start with a perfume. If you value an alcohol-free, discreet and traditional experience, or you need something small to carry around, start with an attar. Many of our customers begin with one of each: a daily perfume such as Silvex 60 for work, and a small attar like Invictus Attar for personal wear.
Value for money
Because you only need a drop or two, a 12 ml attar lasts many weeks of daily use. At PKR 1,800–2,000, it is one of the most economical ways to enjoy a long-lasting fragrance.
Frequently asked questions
Is attar stronger than perfume?
Attar is more concentrated, but it projects less. Perfume is lighter in concentration but spreads further.
Can I wear attar every day?
Yes. Apply a small dab to pulse points; a little goes a long way.
Is attar halal and alcohol-free?
Traditional attars are oil-based and alcohol-free, which is why many people prefer them for prayer and religious occasions. Always check the product description for confirmation.
How many drops of attar should I use?
One or two small dabs on each wrist and one on the neck is plenty. Because attars are concentrated, less is more.
Can I mix attar and perfume?
Yes. Apply attar first, let it settle for a minute, and follow with a perfume that shares similar notes, such as a woody perfume over oud attar.
Does attar stain clothes?
It can, since it is oil-based. Apply to skin where possible, and test a hidden area of fabric before dabbing it onto clothing.
